Last Friday, December 13th, we celebrated the end of the year at the iconic Varela Zarranz Winery, one of Uruguay’s most beautiful and historic wineries, with over 130 years of tradition. Located in Joaquín Suárez, Canelones, just 45 minutes from Montevideo, this winery masterfully blends heritage and innovation.
The winery stands out for its harmonious combination of historical charm and modern technology. Its underground cellar, dating back to 1892, houses the largest collection of French oak barrels still in use in Uruguay, alongside modern barrels that nurture the family’s finest wines. Surrounded by century-old trees and a stunning pathway of olive trees leading to the estate and its majestic manor, it is a true treasure of Uruguay’s winemaking heritage.
Our celebration began with a warm welcome featuring a delicious charcuterie board, followed by a tour of the winery’s impressive facilities. We then enjoyed an exquisite dinner paired with a curated selection of wines, including their Tannat Reserva and the elegant María Zarranz Extra Brut Sparkling Wine, among others.
No celebration would be complete without dancing, and we ended the evening with a fantastic playlist that had everyone on their feet.
This extraordinary year deserved a farewell of this magnitude, surrounded by dear friends and the entire Wine Explorers team.
